Luminaire, capital planet of the Republic of Luminaire
Jan. 17th, 2010 | 09:53 pm
When Survery Flotilla Delta-Nine-One of the old United Nations Explorer Corp first entered the Luminaire system in 98 AE, it was clear that the planet Luminaire would be the only one capable of supporting human life without massive terraforming. Lacking the necessary tools to locate plausible hyperspace jump points meant that the flotilla had to return to colonised space the same way it arrived - sublight light travel.
The onset of the African Civil War in 100 AE paused further exploration fleets, and it was only at the war's conclusion in 124 AE did funding resumed for exploring and colonising. In 126 AE, the Luminaire Colonisation Project was initiated as a joint-venture between various member states of the Western Confederation. In 128 AE, a small pre-colonisation squadron was sent ahead to Luminaire, to prepare for the main arrival of the actual colony ship. In 130 AE, the main colony ship launched.
A slight miscalculation by the launch team overestimated the distance between Terra and Luminaire, and the duration of the cryogenic sleep was tuned with the wrong distance in mind. By the time the inhabitants of the pre-colonisation ships had been woken up by collision alarms in 184 AE, two of the five ships in the squadrons were already destroyed due to the asteroid field in the system. They were supposed to be awaken outside the star system, instead, the miscalculation had them sleeping well after that.
The purpose of the pre-colonisation ships were to set up a landing zone with rudimentary colonisation equipment already set up so that the main colony ship would have a relatively easier time on arrival. Unfortunately, both ships that were destroyed contained valuable supplies and food rations for the squadron, and it appeared unlikely that the survivors of the three ships could survive on remaining rations for the two years it would take for the colony ship to arrive, and pre-colonisation ships of that time were designed for one-way trips in mind.
The three ships - Endeavor, Martin J. Cohen and Freedom remained in orbit for several days, scanning for a suitable landing site. It was then decided that the available resources left will be utilised to construct four towers on the designated landing zone that coincided with the compass points. The automated towers would emit the transmission codes to the colony ship to force it to wake the deep-sleeping colonists up when the ship entered range, as presumably the same mistaken calculation would have been used by the ship.
Secondly, the towers would act as homing beacons for the colony ship to identify as its landing zone, and failing that, the towers themselves would be emitting light visible from even orbit. When construction was completed, the surviving crew members of the squadron went back into deep-sleep onboard their ships, their food rations almost depleted, hoping that the cryogenic systems will hold out long enough for the main colony ship to arrive and rescue them.
When the main colony ship neared the edge of the system two years later, sensors of the Freedom picked it up, and following the preprogrammed script, it activated the towers. As planned, the colony ship forced its colonist awake, and it was able to enter the system without any mishaps. The automated transmittors failed while they were entering planetary orbit, but the light from the beacons were able to guide the ship to the landing site safely.
Amazingly, all the crew members of the three ships survived the deep sleep, and were revered as heroes when revived. The four towers came to be known as the Crown of Suns, and are now a permanent presence in the city skyline. Likewise, the name chosen for the first city established on Luminaire is 'City of Lights', after the shining lights from the towers.
Nowadays, they stand about a kilometer tall each, and the lights are turned on during the night, bathing the city in a soft glow. Much like its original purpose, they continue to be visible from space.

Ship classification of the Republic of Luminaire Navy
Jan. 14th, 2010 | 07:37 pm
In descending order of tonnage:
Super-Capital ship
Super Destroyer
Assault Carrier
Capital ships
Battleship
Battlecruiser / Carrier
Light Carrier
Heavy Cruiser
Cruiser
Destroyer
Typically without hyperspace capabilities
Frigate
Heavy Corvette
Corvette
Notes:
The super destroyer is approximately of the same tonnage as the TFN superdreadnoughts. The RLN has one in active duty, and one destroyed.
Active duty: RLS November, November-class. Destroyed: RLS October, October-class.
The core components of the RLN are its Carrier Groups. Each of them is formed around an assault carrier and multiple carriers.
Notable examples: RLS Alloxe-Corton, flagship of 2nd Carrier Group, Versailles-class. RLS Miramount-de-Guyenne, flagship of 31st Carrier Group, Versailles-class. RLS Respite, flagship of 5th Carrier Group, Undaunted-class.
Unlike the TFN, the RLN uses battleships in rather large numbers to complement its fleets. It is better armed and protected than a battlecruiser, but unable to stand up to a true super capital vessel. They usually lead capital ship squadrons in the RLN.
Notable examples: RLS New Texas and RLS Liberty Plateau, both Centennial-class. RLS Jelgava and RLS Valmiera, both Augszeme-class.

Ship classification of the Terran Federation Navy
Jan. 13th, 2010 | 01:16 am
In descending order of tonnage:
Super-Capital ship
Mobile Fortress
Superdreadnought
Dreadnought / Assault Carrier
Fleet Carrier
Capital ships
Battlecruiser / Carrier
Heavy Cruiser
Cruiser / Escort Carrier
Destroyer
Assault Frigate
Typically without hyperspace capabilities
Frigate
Heavy Corvette
Corvette
Notes:
There is only 1 mobile fortress in service.
TFNS Titan, a Asgard-class mobile fortress, flagship of the Avalon Guard.
There are currently 4 superdreadnoughts in service.
TFNS Guardian's Reckoning of the 1st Kavalrists, TFNS Sentinel's Judgement of the 2nd Kavalrists, TFNS Defender's Pride of the 3rd Kavalrists and TFNS Protector's Resolve of the 4th Kavalrists (commanded by Star Admiral Ralf Augusta). All of them being Crusader-class superdreadnoughts.
Dreadnoughts and assault carriers lead a typical TFN battle group.
Notable examples: TFNS Heaven's Fury, Seraphim-class assault carrier, flagship of 7th Fleet (commanded by Fleet Admiral Cindy Velaberg). TFNS Lilithia, Retribution-class dreadnought, flagship of the 15th Battle Group.
Fleet carriers are considered too frail to be flagships, though they are usually the lead vessels of a fleet's carriers.
Notable examples: TFNS Fifth Dawn and TFNS Seventh Hour, both Justicar-class fleet carriers.
Battlecruisers usually lead task forces that are too small to be full fledged battlegroups. The TFN favors battlecruisers, completely phasing out battleships, instead relying on dreadnoughts to fulfill that role. They also form the core component of most TFN battle groups.
Notable examples: TFNS New Hampshire, McKenna-class. TFNS Glorious Triumph and TFNS Thunder Edge, Redeemer-class. TFNS Seafox and TFNS Orca, Leviathan-class.
Carriers are the fighter-carrying counterpart of battlecruisers, typically found leading fighter-heavy task forces.
Notable examples: TFNS Knight Hammer and TFNS Spear of Vengeance, both Conqueror-class.
Heavy cruisers form the main escort element in a battle group, and they provide the initial capital-class screening element of a fleet, just behind the fighter elements.
Notable examples: TFNS Rolandia, TFNS Sammual, TFNS Testarossa, all Star Knight-class.

Introducing the VF-28
Jan. 6th, 2010 | 04:27 am
New Avalon Aerospace VF-28 Hellion
Role: Naval-based Space Superiority Interceptor
Origin: Terran Federation
Manufacturer: New Avalon Aerospace
Origins: The YF-28 was conceived as a result of Terran Federation Fighter Corp's NextGen Heavy Fighter program to procure a ultra-performance alternative to the mainstay TVF-22 Warhawk that is less constricted by budget concerns. Centauri Shipyards submitted the YF-16, Federation Trinamics submitted the YF-39, and fighter production newcomers New Avalon Aerospace submitted the YF-28 in December, 3264AE.
After simulation evaluation by Fighter Corp Command and recommendation from Fleet Admiral Cindy Velaberg, the YF-28 was chosen as the winner of the competition. 95% of the competition budget was diverted to New Avalon Aerospace to allow them to build test models, while the remaining 5% was distributed between Centauri Shipwards and Federation Trinamics for follow ups.
Test models were constructed, and the fighter entered into limited production as the VF-28 Hellion at the beginning of 3267AE.
Variants:
YF-28X - Initial testing model with TVF-22 engine and gravity drive.
YF-28A - Advanced testing model incorporating New Avalon Institute of Science's experimental hyper fusion engine.
YF-28B - Final testing model.
VF-28 - Block 1 limited production model undergoing combat trials.
Design Features: First implementation of hyper fusion reactor in a fighter frame, reinforced shield generator with triple redundancies, first implementation of a capital-grade anti-fighter energy weapon in a fighter frame. High acceleration, high maneuverability, heavy weapon payload.
Power Plant: NAIS FC-301H fusion engine with classified power output. Two gravity drives with multiple vernier generators.
Accommodation: Pilot only in limited self-propulelling ejection seat. Completely sealed and self-pressurised cockpit with grade 2 inertial compensators.
Armaments: Four high-powered energy cannons arranged in forward-facing double gunbanks. A single capital grade anti-fighter beam cannon located below fuselage. Two internal ATAS (Advanced Tactical Aspect Seeking) missile bays, carrying twenty missiles each. Two standard internal pallets for additional mission configurations capable of carrying ATAS missiles, CMs, and other armaments.
